RIFF067 - Tool - Undertow

Episode description

Two nerds, a laminator, and an extremely long “warm worm” somehow lead to a deep dive into one of the darkest, driest, and most hypnotic debut albums of the ‘90s. Undertow wasn’t just Tool’s arrival — it was a statement: no gloss, no funk, no flannel. Just tight, menacing precision and the kind of sonic control that made everything else in ’93 sound like it was recorded in a gym hall.

Neil and Chris get into Sylvia Massy’s production magic, the infamous piano-and-shotgun session that birthed “Disgustipated,” and why Undertow still feels so unsettlingly alive today. They unpack the censored artwork, the Lollapalooza breakthrough, and what makes this record sound dangerous even three decades later.

If you like your riffs dry, your rhythm sections ritualistic, and your frontmen just a little terrifying — this one’s for you.

We'll be right back.

0:30

We'll be right back.

1:00

No, I do.

1:02

I do.

1:04

Of all the people I know, it's like, who's got a hot water bottle?

1:08

It would be you.

1:09

It's not a hot water bottle.

1:10

What is it?

1:11

It's just going to make you laugh.

1:14

So I've got a bit man flu, so I'm a bit like griff gritty.

1:19

You are gruff.

1:20

So it's called a warm worm.

1:24

And it's like a leg.

1:26

Really?

1:27

It's like long.

1:28

It's like a metre long.

1:29

And it's like that thick.

1:32

And you fill it up with hot water.

1:34

Yeah.

1:35

And then you...

1:36

You could like cuddle it.

1:37

Yeah.

1:38

So then I call a hot water bottle.

1:40

Like a massive warm appendage.

1:41

Yeah, you can only get like a hot water bottle gets you warm in one bit, doesn't it?

1:44

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:45

But you get a whole metre of warmth.

1:47

Yeah, I get really cold feet.

1:48

Yeah.

1:49

Because I'm a 70-year-old woman.

1:53

And so what I do is I have my warm worm and I fill it with boiling.

1:58

It's a disease.

1:59

You know, the big warning.

2:00

Don't do boiling.

2:00

Do not use...

2:01

Because I put boiling water in it.

2:02

Yeah.

2:02

And then what I do is I put it like down near my feet.

2:05

And then as my feet warm, then I slowly kind of move it about a little bit.

2:08

But that's what I've not used it yet, but I'm a bit close.

2:11

Is that like when you're officially kind of like, right, it's now autumn?

2:14

Yeah, it's when my feet hurt.

2:16

Yeah.

2:16

You know when I get into bed and I'm like, oh, my feet hurt.

2:18

So I go and get my warm worm.

2:19

And then the whole family laugh.

2:21

That's circulation, isn't it?

2:22

Yeah.

2:23

What's wrong with your circulation?

2:24

Why is your circulation like that?

2:25

Rubbish.

2:25

I think it's because I've spent 50 years sitting on my arse.

2:29

I do do running and things, so I'm not like terrible.

2:32

And I'm more like, you know, I'm quite capable.

2:34

But I find when I get into bed, I get really cold.

2:39

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

2:40

And I don't like that.

2:41

But I am like a cat.

2:42

I'm just like a cat.

2:43

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

2:44

So you have your warm worm.

2:45

Yeah.

2:45

I just, I don't, yeah.

2:47

I don't like dogs.

2:49

I don't like other people.

2:50

There's another confession.

2:52

Yeah.

2:52

Which is that I took your laminator virginity tonight, didn't I?

2:56

We've, yeah, my little boy has got a homework.

2:59

And now that this is, so he's got to give his homework in tomorrow.

3:02

It's Monday.

3:03

So what time did you receive this?

3:05

I was just heading out of the house to see you.

3:07

And he went, oh, have we got a laminator?

3:10

I go, what?

3:11

Oh, have we got a laminator in the garage?

3:14

He goes, no, we haven't.

3:16

Well, I need to laminate this.

3:18

Can you get it laminated?

3:20

I can find it's like eight o'clock on a Sunday.

3:23

I mean, what?

3:24

And then I messaged you and I said, have you got a laminator?

3:27

And you went, yeah.

3:28

So we laminated something.

3:30

We did.

3:30

We laminated something.

3:31

It's dead good.

3:31

It's interesting, isn't it, lamination?

3:32

It's dead good.

3:33

Yeah, yeah.

3:33

I feel that you're laminating everything now.

3:35

Oh, God.

3:36

Yeah.

3:36

I want to go and laminate everything.

3:37

If you need anything laminating, send it in and we'll do it.

3:42

We should point out that we're Rufology.

3:44

Rufology.

3:45

We are Rufology.

3:46

And we are.

3:48

Four minutes.

3:48

Four minutes in.

3:49

We're Rufology.

3:49

I'm Neil.

3:50

Yes, I'm Chris.

3:51

And welcome.

3:52

Welcome.

3:53

This week.

3:54

We're doing another Maynard.

3:56

Maynard.

3:57

James Keenan.

3:58

He says Maynard.

3:59

Maynard.

4:00

Maynard.

4:01

Maynard James.

4:02

That's what he says.

4:03

Okay, Maynard.

4:04

We say Maynard.

4:05

I'd say Maynard.

4:06

Maynard.

4:07

I wouldn't even think of going Maynard.

4:08

Maynard.

4:09

And yeah, so we're doing Undertow.

4:13

Yeah.

4:14

Because we had a fight last week, didn't we?

4:16

About which one we're going to do.

4:19

Yeah, it was hard.

4:20

And then you won.

4:21

Well, we tossed some keys, didn't we?

4:23

Yeah, that's the way we fight.

4:24

And the thing is, my favourite tour record is Lateralist.

4:27

Yeah.

4:28

But that's 2001.

4:28

That's illegal.

4:29

And our albums have to be 25 years old.

4:32

And we're not there yet.

4:33

Next year?

4:33

Next year?

4:34

We'll come back and do it.

4:36

Yeah, next year we could do Lateralist.

4:38

Because it's interesting.

4:38

I think it's an interesting check.

4:40

Because although, like, I mean, tall to tall.

4:42

Yeah.

4:44

But what I will say is that they, there was definitely a change.

4:50

Because I messaged you in this week, because I messaged you in this week, and I said, this isn't as weird as I remember it.

4:57

yes that's true they did get more weird yeah um so so um even though they did get a piano and

5:06

smash it and then shoot it with shotguns yeah well so i was just trying to think the lineup

5:13

changed didn't it so this one the bassist was um uh demore wasn't it and then that changed to

5:21

uh justin chancellor yeah i think and then but it's weird it's like the

5:29

the the band that so last week we did perfect circle and that was later we did med and arms that

5:38

was that was like later that was the back end of the 90s yeah so we're back in like 93 now this is 93

5:43

yeah that like it's interesting when you get up to 2001 for lateralist tool tool sound to me like a

5:50

much more competent band and that's not to say this doesn't no sound competent but they

5:55

they just seem to get like like better sharper and it's it's it feels to me like they like here

6:02

they're experimenting and they're doing some really cool stuff and they're doing stuff with like

6:06

soundscape isn't it yeah this is soundscape as they move on it turns into like music maths a little bit

6:11

it does but you can't so like there are bits in here where i think oh that sounds weird yeah yeah

6:16

time signature bits yeah but you're like you're not like i don't know it doesn't feel it doesn't

6:22

feel like wrong no or anything no no no it feels like well that feels a little bit weird yeah by the

6:28

time you get to lateralist it it doesn't feel weird no it is weird yes you know the time signature is

6:33

weird but it doesn't sound it so unless it's tall unless somebody tells you yeah that's a weird time

6:39

signature yeah yeah lots of people would just be like i don't i don't get it it's just it's just

6:43

it's just all like that yeah okay i get i get that it you know i get that it's not acdc yeah

6:48

yeah but it's just like proggy yeah weird proggy stuff right it doesn't sound weird whereas here

6:53

there are bits and where the times like it's oh that feels a bit not jarring is the wrong word for it but

6:59

it's like it feels like by the time they get to lateralist they're able to muck about with these

7:04

weird time signatures and do odd stuff yes yeah and make it sound like a a single yeah yeah yeah it's like

7:12

oh you know i think they're experimenting and trying to figure out where they are

7:16

yeah um but i think the thing that makes this special the reason i'm quite pleased that we did

7:21

this is that like 1993 yeah like like it was it was the back end of nirvana was it so yeah so so

7:30

you've just gone through um yeah so you've just gone through nirvana yeah and you're kind of in this

7:36

like post grunge yeah yeah world you're in like so alt rock was like pearl jam and stuff kind of

7:41

getting big but like heavy music chaos ad yes came out carcass heart work morbid angel did covenant

7:48

yeah um death did individual thought patterns typo negative nirvana did in utero yeah um

7:55

um siamese dream yeah uh and anthrax did sound of white noise which you know because they're all of

8:01

those a thick big thick thick chunky yeah yeah yeah stuff and this is this is quite thin sounding

8:08

isn't it in comparison but the other thing about this is this like proggy yeah right now proggy music

8:14

in 93 yeah was widly guitars yeah it was dream theater it was that long yeah it was like

8:19

all that and then you had if you had a drum kit you had like a million drums yes so it was always like

8:25

and that was proggy right yeah but then tour came along and and and with this they were soundscapey

8:33

yeah the the songs were proggy not because of like virtuoso yeah but because the the structure of the

8:42

song was bonkers yeah yeah and it's riffy yeah but it's but it's not like acdc no no no no it's got

8:50

this kind of like uh i don't know it's like driving isn't it it's kind of it's like you know

8:56

like i love watching you play when when you play you you're you're it's like your whole body will

9:00

play and you kind of ebb and flow with the song right and it's like that it's this it's not even

9:07

the bits that are like staccato yeah in in undertow it still still flows yeah yeah i know it sounds

9:16

weird what you're saying but i know exactly what you mean it doesn't stop and start does it it's not

9:19

like um i'm trying to like periphery or yeah yeah yeah you know these bands that they're a bit like

9:26

being like uh i don't know i've been punched in the face it's kind of like yeah yeah it's not that

9:31

genti kind of thing it's no it's not the genti no it's a liquid it's like it feels like it's flowing

9:36

yeah it's not jagged at all is it no there's no part of this is jagged it's fuzzy it's like a warm

9:41

worm that's what this is that's the right word for it it's kind of fuzzy it's you know we did

9:46

mere de noms last week and it's got that's layer on layer on layer that's like this kind of um um

9:52

you know like you know those french cakes what do they call them french fancies no not french fancy

9:58

angel cake no but they're french but you know they do these things and they're called like they're

10:04

they're like every other country than france they're like they're like layers thin tiny thin

10:11

wafer thin layers wafer thin layers but there's like 100 like like 30 wafer thin layers i've never

10:15

had this what you're talking about somebody's gonna write in and say it's a thing right yeah yeah

10:20

mere de noms like that yeah it's these wafer thin layers yeah of things and when you bite into it

10:26

all together it's like oh that's amazing yeah yeah right this this is no marble cake no layers of like

10:32

layers of rock eventually you'll need to go for a wee in a bit and i'll look it up

10:36

um it begins with m yeah i've seen it on a pretentious cooking show

10:43

um but this isn't this is like it's weird to me this like this so undertow it doesn't it it feels

10:51

less less layer-y less stuff but it's still very madeira no no where's madeira's from portugal

10:57

oh is it i'm saying every other country um but anyway this this this i don't know how i don't

11:03

know quite how how many um like tracks this was recorded over but it doesn't feel quite it's quite

11:09

live isn't it it's like it's like the four guys in the room playing together yeah yeah uh yeah i think

11:13

that's what that separates the the those two records for me so murder noms feels like this kind of

11:18

exquisite layer after layer after layer this feels like a live performance it's got this yeah yeah

11:24

it's got this yeah melt meal foie meal foie is it mel foie yeah is that what it said yeah yeah

11:32

meal i've never heard of that in my life well you're from from from south derbyshire oh it's that sort

11:38

of cake you see what i mean the layer wafer thin yeah yeah yeah like this that's it yeah imagine each

11:45

one of those is a track yeah chris yes just show me a picture of a cake yeah meal foil or whatever

11:50

they will be like one one of at least one of our listeners will be from france just like or canada

11:59

and speak french they speak very good french yeah they they will be unimpressed with this bit yeah

12:04

me fui

12:05

do you know like well half of our listeners will be googling what what how do you spell that

12:13

hang on oh i i'm on google so i can pronounce it what was it m e i l l e four oh foie foie meal foie meal foie meal foie or meal foie yeah or meal free oh i like meal foie the best whatever but oh do you know what it means

12:39

oh this is this actually does it mean i know we tangent is layered cake no no even better it goes

12:44

back into exactly what you're talking about listen to this oh go on it translates to

12:47

thousand sheets or thousand leaves oh so it's like it's like layers of leaves yeah

12:54

maynard will be listening to this going dickhead comparing my album to a cake

13:00

but i did sorry about that dude uh but but it but it is it feels

13:04

you know uh uh medinoms had got this like exquisite layering going on yeah yeah this feels like a live

13:11

record it feels like this is kind of um you know like you say it's got that delicate kind of soundscape

13:19

to it there's space in there yeah um there's like there's interesting it has got it's still got that

13:23

tall rhythmic i know we're talking about yeah it's got the tight it's still got the tight rhythmic stuff

13:27

tightly miked vocals as well yes yeah so they're full yeah there's not loads of reverbs it's quite dry

13:33

tightly yeah that's the tall sound the guitars are tight i'm blurting loads tonight sorry

13:38

it is that's tool yeah tool is bone like mostly bone dry there's not loads of effects and reverbs but

13:46

at the time this is a big old rock if you know as i'm reading down these albums uh uh sepultura's

13:53

chaos ad yeah the drum sound in there is really big and yeah yeah kind of roomy and and stuff right

13:58

and carcasses heart work that's got you know they're big sounding records yeah yeah yeah and this is

14:05

tight with his tie isn't it this is quite quite dry yeah it's kind of like hardcorey in tonality

14:11

yeah it's kind of got this um but i think that's kind of what gives this record its tone because it's

14:16

got a menacing tone to it although it's kind of quite it's not jaggedy like slipknot um but like it's

14:25

it's got a tone to it like it's got like this kind of hardcore yeah tone to that kind of dry you know

14:30

when they're like i'm punk when they dry it right up and it's kind of got this do you know what i mean

14:33

it sounds quite nasty sounding yeah it's just not quite that dry but it's yeah it's not it's not kind of

14:40

full of reverb and no no it's got a it's got an interesting sound to it i think i mean

14:45

produced of course by sylvia massey yeah um and it's not very often i have to just point this out

14:53

it's not very often we say a female name when we're talking about production because it feels like a very

14:59

male dominated world to me production and mixing and all that yeah i think you're right i think metal

15:06

is do you remember we we had a radio show and we were being tasked to play more female

15:09

music yeah um and it occurred to me when when we were getting there i mean there are some really

15:14

big female names in metal it's not like there aren't any but they're massively outnumbered yeah

15:20

you know there's this there's significantly more is this quite a male dominated thing i don't know

15:26

whether that's you know just there are more more blokes like metal or whether it's just you know

15:33

music in general is yeah yeah he's biased that way but you dead right and especially production

15:39

yeah it's incredibly rare to to get that but she's done some like i mean her list is it's unbelievable

15:46

bonkers unbelievable this was her first breakthrough yeah right so 1993 undertow this was the first one

15:52

she did their ep as well so they did an ep called opiate before this i think there was an ep before

15:59

that okay yeah yeah and i can't bloody remember it's on set of numbers like 262 blah blah blah blah

16:06

do you know what let me i'll look in a bit there is there is oh no hang on i did put in a tag hang on

16:11

uh yeah 72826 it was released on cassette by toolshed music in 1991 so that suggests it's toolshed music

16:23

is probably their own yeah they just got a load of tapes copied yeah then the rest went out on zoo

16:29

yeah yeah yeah um but i wanted to look so sylvia massey um if i look at her um because you were saying

16:37

before that her like the iconic desk of the sound city sound yeah that's her desk yeah yeah yeah i

16:44

didn't i i don't know whether uh because in the in the documentary from um you man dave growl who i

16:51

don't know whether we're allowed to like anymore but he's i think it's pretty cool so he he does that

16:55

and all of the desk all of a lot of that hardware was hers yeah yeah yeah um let me go i'm just going

17:01

to go through some of the stuff right that she did so um so she did a bunch of stuff back from she

17:06

started in 1984 where she was an assistant engineer then a co-producer in 86 for um for sea hags uh then

17:14

she did a whole bunch of stuff in um so she did femme fatale she did joe satrian is surfing with the

17:21

aliens it's incredible isn't it um exodus pleasures of the flesh in 87 um and then as i look through here

17:29

she had oh some of the biggest stuff more fun stuff so shake your money maker in 90 yeah that's yeah

17:35

but she's assistant engineer yeah so she's an assistant engineer yeah yeah yeah and then um

17:41

there's a couple of here where she's done some mixing so she she mixed a seal um track and then

17:47

as i'm looking down her list i think this uh for 93 opiate is the production yeah she's the that's the

17:54

first proper one that she's the uh producer for but then as you go through that list so she did divine

18:01

intervention in 95 yeah slayer slayer yeah uh skunk and nancy paranoid and sunburnt in 95 great records

18:08

um she did tom petty and the heartbreakers rem's road movie in 96 um deftones uh can't even breathe

18:17

single in 97 um then she did pavements uh she was co-producer on that one but then there's like

18:25

rage against the machine oh this is for the tibetan freedom concert she kind of engineered

18:29

all of all of that kind of stuff smashing pumpkins um uh credits for for various singles and she's just

18:39

tons like system of a down marmalade um seven dust singles it's just mad yeah yeah just been around

18:47

been involved been present got stuff done yeah she was yeah i mean still is i mean she's still got

18:54

credits up to 2023 yeah and i think the interesting thing about her approach to production is from what

19:04

i've been listening through this this stuff these interviews and and reading about it it's more about

19:10

getting the band in like a really creative place yeah and it's not just about recording music and tracking

19:15

music is actually about kind of getting the band in a particular state um i think that during the

19:23

recording of undertow we were discussing how to make the world's most obnoxious sound and uh i threw out

19:35

some ideas of getting an old piano getting getting a piano and lifting it up to the top of a

19:42

building with a crane and then dropping it and recording that and that should be a really

19:49

obnoxious sound uh so i went about trying to find a crane company that would do it for for us i knew

19:59

where to get the pianos these pianos the the uh they're relics that can't be repaired they're totaled

20:09

basically uh so many of these old pianos can't be repaired so you can get them for you know uh just

20:16

fifty dollars or such so um but i couldn't get a crane company to to actually do this lifting and

20:24

dropping so i i bought two two uh pianos we pushed them into the the dock at the back of uh grandmaster's

20:34

studio and um and we just set out to make the most obnoxious noise ever and whatever would happen with

20:44

it we we were going to use it or not use it i don't know we we didn't know what it would be like

20:49

um i uh wanted them to be performing while they were smashing it i provided everybody with uh sledge

20:58

hammers pickaxes and um there was something else everyone had safety glasses and yeah it was exciting

21:07

and then danny brought his sawed off shotgun so shooting holes into the piano uh there were two pianos and

21:14

and uh and uh yeah they were destroyed it was spent a whole a whole afternoon having fun doing that and

21:20

uh and there is some footage out there of that that whole day that was super fun and then amazingly uh

21:28

we were able to to sequence that into what is disgustipated on the end of the record and maynard

21:38

uh performed a uh speaking part over it and uh uh the sequencing was done we took all the sounds and i

21:48

and and i did little samples of different sounds and sent them over to my friend um eric anist

21:54

uh his name is uh his stage name is static and um he put together this performance piece

22:03

that was on the end of the undertow record i think it came out great it's super weird though i mean it's

22:08

like you know it's like the angel of the war came out of the gate snatching me up from my place of slumber

22:14

and took me on high and higher still until we moved through the spaces between the air itself

22:21

and he bumped into a vast farmland of our old midwest

22:25

and as we descended cries of impending doom rose from the soil

22:31

one thousand nay a million voices full of fear and terror possessed me then and i begged angel of

22:41

the lord what are these tortured screens and the angel said unto me these are the cries of the carrots

22:49

the cries of the carrots you see reverend maynard tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust

23:01

it's a spring for my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers

23:07

and roared hear me now i have seen the light they have a consciousness they have the life they have

23:16

the soul damn you let the rabbits wear glasses save our brother's gonna get an amen

23:25

can i can i get a hallelujah

amazing

27:47

is

27:47

it's

27:47

about

27:47

not

27:47

remotely musical

27:49

no

27:49

but he's about

27:51

the performance of this getting the artist in the right space

27:53

yeah to produce their best stuff

27:55

yeah you know it's not like

27:57

um you know your bob rocks

27:59

yeah

27:59

um who

28:01

you know were um meticulous about about getting the thing perfect and it down right or not lang even

28:07

this kind of you know you've got to play a million times until it's perfect

28:09

yeah he he you know um rick rubin was far more about like you know it's it's uh what was that he's got that brilliant quote hasn't he about you know the the best take is the one where you are almost out of control you only just managed to get it done that's the take that we want kind of thing that we want kind of thing.

28:25

that's the take that we that we want kind of thing and it was it was about this um it was about the art it was about you know it's not about it being you've just summarized it perfectly it's not about the being to click it's not about being perfect to the computer saying oh that was but yeah on you know it was it was about this um expressive nature of getting getting it out and and the and the art of you know the song so yeah yeah as soon as i saw that those two were connected

28:53

connected yeah yeah that's it yeah that is yeah she's come from the school of rick rubin effectively or at least kind of they were in the same space yeah i'm exploring the same yeah exactly i think that i think that he and her just were like you say on the same wavelength yeah and that rick you know rick rick was never going to work with death leopard he's never going to be able to figure that out yeah um

29:15

um but bands like tall it was able to you know get behind this um this the expression that they

29:23

were trying to pull through but but without getting into the you know the the deep the

29:28

technical details yeah of that getting them into a space but the thing i hadn't realized and and it

29:34

really connected a lot of dots for me with this record is the fact that she did try to do a lot

29:37

of it live yeah a lot of it was kind of stand up and done in a live space yeah yeah get the band

29:43

feeling right then hit the button yeah whereas you know we we talked about murder noms last week

29:48

for me that was not no like if pad's just playing all those violins yeah yeah she ain't gonna do that

29:55

live in one take you know that's multi-layer that's have like 12 violins on an arm but it but it's

30:00

interesting isn't it it's still they've like we talked about last week there is uh this similarity

30:05

there's a tonality where you think oh actually that there is definitely a um you can tell they're kind

30:12

cousins yes do you know i mean yeah and i think some of it's that tightly miked yeah

30:17

maynard's vocals um but but there is definitely something that connects

30:23

where like mad and noms wasn't and and this came from yes yeah even though the the production almost

30:31

like the dna the dna of the sound is different yeah and you know and this this this has got

30:36

quite a live punchy sound to it um you know it sounds it's interesting this this has got almost

30:43

like a um like a demo yeah feel to it you know what i mean it's not that it's like roughly recorded

30:49

but it doesn't sound like super polished no but you have to bear in mind like like hysteria was done

30:54

in 87 which sounded like perfect brian adams was banging stuff out you had like um what adrenalized

31:01

from deaf leper came out in 92 yeah those records sound like exquisite you go back and they're perfect

31:08

yeah there's nothing on them that's a little bit jaggedy or or whatever whereas this has got this has

31:14

got like a um a word it's like a i don't know what the word is it's like a it's raw yeah it sounds

31:23

analog yeah it's got this kind of analog sound to it where you know if you i i i mean this may have

31:28

been done to click but i don't think it was no it doesn't feel like it was done i don't know how you

31:33

would you know the bits where it kind of the timing changes yeah yeah i don't know whether they just do

31:38

that yeah there's no way it's it's they're playing together aren't they yeah they're playing together

31:43

and they're really tight you can imagine you can imagine you can imagine somebody with a metronome

31:47

just just suddenly ramping up going uh but yeah i i it's it's got a cool like uh organic is the word

31:54

i'm looking for yeah yeah yeah it's it you know what i mean it doesn't doesn't feel like there's a

31:59

computer here yeah you know keeping everybody in time kind of thing you kind of like you say you

32:04

kind of get get this feeling like it it evolved that the the track and the song has evolved and

32:09

the timing changes and the structure changes nobody likes to be put in a

32:13

in a pigeonhole of sorts you know but i guess we are kind of kind of metal kind of grunge kind of

32:23

dry a heap slash grateful dead vibe a little bit of steve martin banjo music slipped in there

32:30

so

32:35

so

32:35

so

32:41

so

32:48

so

32:53

so

32:54

so

so

so

32:57

there's a

33:09

there's a

33:11

there's a shadow just behind me

33:13

shouting every step i take

33:17

making every promise empty

33:20

pointing every finger at me

33:23

waiting like a stalking butler who upon the finger rest

44:12

44:13

44:14

44:16

44:17

just Henry Rollins

44:18

just played him Henry Rollins

44:19

bit on bottom

44:36

I love you.

45:06

I love you.

45:36

But I feel like I'm the part that you've made me lose.

45:41

Killed.

45:42

And threatened.

45:46

Weakness.

45:49

It makes me feel ugly.

45:54

I'm on my knees and burn in my pants and mose on.

46:00

You lift.

46:01

Set my head off.

46:04

I'm dead.

46:06

I'm sorry.

46:14

I'm sorry.

46:15

I'm sorry.

46:21

I'm sorry.

46:23

She lives up, she lives up, she lives up She lives up, she lives up, she lives up in the bottle

46:53

Thank you.

47:23

If I let you, you would make me destroy myself.

47:38

In order to survive you, I must first survive myself.

47:45

And I can sink no further.

47:50

And I cannot forgive you.

47:53

There's no choice but to confront you.

48:04

To engage you.

48:07

To erase you.

48:16

I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain.

48:20

I've used my mistakes against you.

48:23

There's no other choice.

48:30

I'm shameless now.

48:32

I'm meaningless now.

48:35

I'm willing now.

48:39

I'm knowing now.

48:44

But my soul must be iron.

48:46

And my fear is naked.

48:49

Naked and fearless.

48:53

And my fear is naked.

48:56

Dead.

48:56

Dead.

48:57

Dead inside.

49:00

Dead inside.

49:03

Dead inside.

49:04

Dead inside.

49:07

Dead inside.

49:10

Dead inside.

49:11

Nameless now.

49:14

Shade lost now.

49:17

Nothing now.

49:21

No one, no

49:25

And you save me

49:36

Naked, no

49:38

Fearless, no

49:42

Naked, no

49:45

Fearless, no

49:49

Fearless, no

49:56

Fearless, no

49:58

Fearless, no

49:59

Fearless, no

50:00

Dead inside

50:03

Dead inside

50:06

Dead inside

50:10

Dead inside

50:17

Dead inside

50:20

Dead inside

50:23

Dead inside

50:25

Dead inside

50:27

Dead inside

50:29

Dead inside

50:31

Hater gives me alive

50:43

Happiness gives me alive

50:47

Weakness gives me alive

50:50

Can't keep me alive

50:53

It's better

51:01

Weakness gives me alive

51:31

The other interesting thing with this

51:32

Is like we're going back to these

51:34

You know these kind of early 90s and stuff

51:37

I was talking to somebody

51:40

I had to go to Scotland for work

51:44

We're going to talk about that in a minute as well

51:45

Because that was bonkers

51:46

I enjoyed that a lot

51:47

But so I was talking to somebody

51:49

Much much younger

51:51

Like in early 30s

51:52

And we were talking about

51:55

You know albums and blah blah blah blah blah

51:57

And I was saying that we were going to do Undertow this week

51:58

And she was like oh yeah

52:00

You know it's a cool record

52:02

I'm not a big tool fan

52:03

But I kind of know of that record kind of thing

52:06

And she says there's a lot of nostalgia back for the

52:09

You know for the 90s and the internet

52:11

And all of that

52:11

Yeah yeah yeah

52:12

I was like 93

52:13

The internet didn't exist

52:14

No

52:15

We didn't have the internet

52:16

Yes

52:17

In 93

52:17

Yeah yeah yeah

52:17

Like not even

52:18

I mean I was at the cutting edge

52:21

Of that world

52:22

We

52:22

Like maybe

52:25

You didn't have the World Wide Web

52:28

But we had dial up internet

52:30

You had

52:30

Yeah yeah

52:31

BBSs and stuff

52:32

But you know

52:33

You weren't like on Google

52:36

No

52:36

No no no no no no

52:37

You weren't

52:38

You certainly weren't getting music

52:40

It was Alta Vista first anyway wasn't it

52:41

Yeah yeah

52:42

You weren't getting music from it at all

52:46

MP3

52:47

I might be wrong

52:50

I don't think MP3s

52:51

Wasn't a thing no

52:53

That was kind of a lot later

52:55

Like lame

52:56

Yeah yeah yeah

52:56

And stuff didn't really come through

52:58

Until about 95

52:59

I don't think

53:00

Maybe

53:01

Maybe a bit before

53:02

But you know

53:04

It was a different

53:04

Completely different world

53:06

Yeah yeah yeah

53:07

This was tapes

53:07

Tape trading

53:08

Yeah yeah

53:09

It was

53:09

It was

53:09

You know

53:10

You were copying stuff onto tape

53:11

Yeah

53:12

You had your Walkman

53:13

But it was fascinating

53:15

It was really interesting

53:16

Yeah yeah yeah

53:16

To have that conversation with somebody

53:18

Yes

53:18

That wasn't there

53:19

Didn't see it

53:19

Yeah yeah yeah

53:20

Almost like couldn't imagine a world

53:22

Where the internet wasn't

53:23

Yeah yeah yeah

53:24

Do you know what I mean

53:25

And it was

53:25

Well I was even thinking about

53:26

You know

53:27

Before we've recorded tonight

53:28

We were downstairs here

53:29

At the library

53:30

In the studio

53:31

And you were talking about

53:32

Some of the stuff

53:33

That you've managed to pull together

53:34

This week using AI

53:35

Oh god yeah yeah

53:36

And like meetings

53:37

And you know

53:38

Annotating stuff

53:38

And you just think

53:39

One day that's going to be

53:41

Like at the minute

53:42

It's blowing our minds

53:42

Yeah yeah

53:43

It's totally blowing our minds

53:44

The fact that

53:44

You know I had a meeting tonight

53:46

Yeah

53:46

I didn't even have to write anything down

53:48

It summarised it all

53:48

It summarised it all

53:49

And then it sent everyone the message

53:50

With the summary of the meetings

53:51

But it's like

53:52

We do like for the

53:53

For the description for the show

53:54

Yeah

53:55

I just take

53:55

We get the transcript

53:56

So we do

53:56

We record the show

53:57

We do the transcript

53:58

And I just dump it into

53:59

ChatGPT

54:00

And say just

54:01

Summarise this

54:01

Summarise this waffle

54:03

And it comes back

54:04

And I go

54:04

Oh that was interesting

54:05

And it reminds me

54:07

And then I kind of

54:07

Sketch it together

54:08

But yeah

54:09

It was

54:11

I think it's

54:12

Easy to forget

54:14

Yeah yeah yeah

54:15

The world

54:15

In which this album

54:17

Came out

54:18

Yes

54:18

Into

54:19

You know

54:19

It was

54:20

It was

54:20

It was

54:21

It was

54:21

Like a

54:22

Radically different world

54:23

I want to talk a little bit

54:24

About the

54:25

Edinburgh Mile

54:26

Yes

54:26

Okay yeah

54:27

Because I walked on it

54:28

This week

54:28

So I

54:29

We live in the Midlands

54:30

And I went to Scotland

54:32

That's

54:32

For

54:33

For Americans

54:34

As you're looking at this

54:35

Like because my

54:36

My mate was with me

54:38

And

54:38

It was like

54:40

I've got a lot of Americans listening

54:41

Yeah

54:42

Hello Americans

54:42

Hello Americans

54:43

Hello America

54:44

Hello America

54:45

Definitely

54:46

Good

54:47

Anyway

54:49

So

54:49

Most of my

54:51

US colleagues

54:52

Flew into

54:53

Heathrow

54:54

Yeah

54:55

They dossed about

54:56

In London

54:58

For a few days

54:59

And then

55:00

They got on

55:00

A train

55:01

Yeah

55:01

And went up to Scotland

55:02

Yeah yeah yeah

55:03

Which is great

55:03

And they're like

55:04

Why does it take

55:05

Like seven hours

55:06

Yeah

55:06

The slow train

55:08

That kind of

55:08

Meanders up there

55:09

And they're like

55:10

You're in

55:11

In the US

55:13

I could get from

55:14

One end of the country

55:14

To the other

55:15

Really easily

55:16

And on the map

55:17

When you look on the map

55:18

Yeah

55:18

Like London to Scotland

55:19

It's not very far

55:20

Yes

55:20

Like you could put

55:21

Your finger over that

55:21

Yeah

55:22

Not very big

55:22

Yeah

55:22

So A

55:24

They had to deal with that

55:25

Kind of whole

55:25

Why does it take so long

55:26

To get everywhere

55:27

Yeah

55:27

Which was good fun

55:28

And then

55:29

We all walked up

55:31

The Edinburgh

55:32

Our hotel was

55:33

Like one end of that

55:34

And the

55:34

Meeting

55:35

The meeting space

55:35

Was at the other

55:36

And

55:37

I've never seen

55:40

Anything quite like it

55:41

Imagine

55:42

Anything

55:43

Yeah

55:43

Absolutely anything

55:44

If you

55:44

Let's say you wanted to buy

55:45

Like a stuffed doll

55:48

Of Elvis

55:49

On a sheet

55:50

With a sword

55:51

Yeah

55:52

Right

55:52

They will sell it

55:53

On the edge of a mile

55:55

They will sell it

55:56

Yeah

55:56

But

55:57

And there's a big but

55:58

Yeah

55:58

It will say Scotland on it

55:59

Yeah

56:00

So if you want anything

56:02

You know like an alien

56:03

Like having sex

56:05

With a piano

56:05

Yeah

56:06

As long as it says

56:07

Scotland on it

56:07

Yeah

56:08

Yeah

56:08

It's there

56:08

You'll find it down there

56:09

Yeah

56:09

Yeah

56:09

Anything you can imagine

56:11

Yeah

56:11

Scotland on it

56:12

Edinburgh mile

56:13

Yeah

56:13

Wow

56:14

It's a bonkers place

56:15

Yeah

56:15

Yeah

56:15

I loved it

56:16

It was great

56:17

I kind of got

56:18

You know when you get

56:19

A bit carried away

56:19

Yeah

56:20

I went in all of the

56:20

Like the shops

56:22

Did you buy vinyl

56:23

I didn't

56:24

I didn't have time

56:25

There was a lovely

56:26

Vinyl shop actually

56:27

And I did

56:27

I did kind of poke my head

56:28

In the window

56:29

But it was closed

56:30

When I was there

56:32

So I went to Dubwreck

56:33

The other night

56:33

Which is in Derby

56:34

Oh yeah

56:34

It's cool there

56:35

Yeah yeah

56:35

And Jay's done a really

56:36

Good job there

56:37

And he's

56:37

And they've just opened

56:38

A new bit

56:39

Which is a shop

56:39

Oh

56:40

And it sells

56:41

Kind of new

56:42

Or pre-owned vinyl

56:43

Has he got a copy

56:44

Of the 2017

56:46

Re-release

56:47

Of Superstar College

56:48

I looked

56:49

Did you

56:50

I looked for you

56:50

I thought

56:51

Oh you know

56:51

I might

56:52

Happenstance

56:53

You know

56:53

I might chance upon it

56:54

And no I didn't

56:55

It wasn't in there

56:55

But I did

56:57

I've

56:57

I've never

56:58

This is right

56:59

So I've never

56:59

Been in a record shop

57:02

Yeah

57:02

And just flicked

57:03

Through the records

57:03

I loved that

57:04

Like I used to do

57:05

With CDs

57:06

Yeah

57:06

But I was too young

57:08

To do the vinyl thing

57:09

Where it was all vinyls

57:09

That was school

57:10

I went through

57:12

Every single one

57:13

The whole rack

57:14

You can't help

57:15

But lift them up

57:16

As well

57:16

Yeah yeah yeah

57:16

You can't help

57:17

Like you've seen

57:18

The album cover

57:18

A million times

57:19

Yeah

57:19

And you'll get to some

57:21

And I still lift it out

57:22

Yeah yeah

57:22

And I still lift it out

57:23

And I still flip it around

57:24

And I still read the back

57:25

And I still

57:26

Yeah

57:27

I've got a copy

57:28

I've got it

57:28

I don't need to lift it up

57:29

I better still do it

57:30

I still pick it up

57:31

And look at it

57:31

It was beautiful

57:32

I was so relaxed

57:33

I was so just

57:34

I could just do this for hours

57:36

Like just looking through these

57:37

And not even intend to buy it

57:39

Just let them flick through

57:39

Just looking

57:40

See what I've got

57:40

It's so nice

57:41

And then you pick

57:41

And it's in the album art

57:43

Really nice and big

57:44

Yeah

57:44

And they were in nice wallets

57:46

And there was one that

57:47

I can't remember

57:47

What it was now

57:48

I said oh I'll have to get that

57:48

For Neil

57:49

Yeah

57:49

Is that like 20 quid

57:50

Yeah

57:51

And then I thought

57:52

Oh no I might already have it

57:53

Or one of those sort of things

57:54

20 quid's about right for me

57:56

Yeah

57:56

20 quid is about right

57:57

And I normally do like

57:58

One a month

57:59

Yes

57:59

I kind of go

58:00

Yeah yeah yeah

58:00

But I've

58:02

I've taken

58:02

I bought

58:03

When I kind of got back

58:04

Into vinyls a few years ago

58:06

I bought some of the re-releases

58:08

Yeah

58:09

And I've gone off it a bit

58:10

Yeah yeah yeah yeah

58:10

And I much prefer now

58:13

Getting the originals

58:15

Yeah

58:16

Do you know what I mean

58:16

Yeah

58:16

It's weak

58:17

Like some of them

58:17

Like that

58:18

Superstar car wash

58:20

Yeah

58:20

Stupid money

58:22

Yeah yeah yeah

58:22

There are others as well

58:23

That I just think are bonkers

58:24

Like so like

58:25

The

58:27

I bought

58:28

Ride the

58:28

I bought the

58:29

An original copy

58:30

Of Ride the Lightning

58:31

It cost me like 22 quid

58:33

Or whatever

58:34

Yeah

58:34

Now they're like 100 quid

58:36

Yeah yeah yeah

58:37

For these original copies

58:38

Rain in Blood

58:39

I've got two copies of

58:40

I bought two copies of Raining Blood

58:42

I bought the first one

58:43

I think cost me like 25 quid

58:45

And it was

58:45

But it's missing

58:46

What I really wanted

58:48

Inside

58:48

It's like the Def Jam

58:50

Yes

58:50

You've got this like

58:51

Inner sleeve

58:52

Yeah yeah yeah

58:53

It's like a red

58:53

Like it's like red text

58:55

And a white thing

58:55

And that

58:56

But that's what I kind of

58:56

Really wanted

58:57

That I remember

58:57

Yeah yeah yeah

58:58

And I kind of wanted

58:58

The first copy I bought

59:00

Didn't have it

59:00

And I was too

59:01

I didn't look

59:02

You know when you pick it up

59:02

I picked it up

59:03

It didn't look

59:04

And then

59:05

And then bought another copy

59:06

I paid a bit more

59:07

For like 35 quid or whatever

59:08

They're over 100 quid now

59:10

Yeah yeah yeah

59:10

And like 100 quid

59:11

I just don't

59:12

I'm not paying 100 quid for them

59:13

No no

59:14

So

59:14

But you get massive bargains

59:17

Like I bought

59:17

I really like

59:19

God properly off topic now

59:21

But I really like

59:22

There's a guy called

59:23

Tuck Smith

59:24

He's in a band called

59:26

The Biters

59:27

He's in a band now

59:27

Called Tuck Smith

59:28

And The Wrestler's Hearts

59:29

So a proper

59:30

You know

59:31

Like floor stampy

59:34

Rock and roll

59:34

Yeah yeah yeah

59:35

I think it's really

59:36

Really cool

59:36

And there

59:38

I bought

59:39

Earache

59:39

Did their first two albums

59:41

For 8 quid

59:41

Yeah

59:42

So I got two

59:42

Two records

59:43

For 8 quid

59:44

Yeah

59:44

The postage cost me more

59:45

Than the records

59:46

Pretty much

59:47

And I don't know

59:48

There's something

59:48

There's something

59:49

Really lovely about

59:50

I'd sit down

59:52

In my record collection

59:53

And you'd just

59:53

Thumb your way through them

59:54

Yeah it's nice

59:55

And you'd just

59:55

Oh yeah I fancy

59:56

Because I never

59:57

Because it was always

59:58

Like I suppose

59:58

When this album came out

59:59

It was either cassette

1:00:00

Or CD

1:00:01

Wasn't it

1:00:01

Mostly CD

1:00:02

Yeah yeah

1:00:02

For me this was

1:00:04

Like a lot of these

1:00:07

I'm going to refer to it

1:00:09

As like extreme

1:00:09

Yeah

1:00:10

I don't mean it like that

1:00:12

I don't mean it

1:00:12

It wasn't like

1:00:13

You know

1:00:14

Bolt thrower and stuff

1:00:15

It wasn't like

1:00:15

Kind of super fast

1:00:16

But it was

1:00:17

You know

1:00:18

You weren't

1:00:18

This wasn't Pearl Jam

1:00:19

No exactly

1:00:20

You weren't in like

1:00:21

You know

1:00:21

Selling millions of copies

1:00:23

These would have come out

1:00:24

On cassette

1:00:24

Yeah

1:00:25

And you'd have bought it

1:00:26

On cassette

1:00:26

Yeah

1:00:27

Or yeah

1:00:28

Or you may have had it

1:00:29

On CD

1:00:29

Yeah you might have had it

1:00:30

On CD

1:00:31

Yeah

1:00:31

Or you'd have recorded it

1:00:32

Off CD

1:00:32

Yeah

1:00:32

But yeah

1:00:34

It was

1:00:35

It would have been

1:00:38

Like probably those

1:00:39

Later 80s ones

1:00:40

Would have been on vinyl

1:00:41

Yeah

1:00:41

But then there was

1:00:42

That big crossover

1:00:42

Like I would have been

1:00:43

At college from

1:00:44

1:00:45

89, 90, 91, 92

1:00:47

Yeah yeah yeah

1:00:47

I don't think I listened

1:00:49

To anything other than cassettes

1:00:50

No no

1:00:51

No well I just remember

1:00:51

My dad having vinyls

1:00:52

And they were in the

1:00:53

This little cubby hole

1:00:54

Thing under the stairs

1:00:55

Yeah

1:00:56

There was a rack of vinyl

1:00:57

In there that my dad had

1:00:58

And it was like

1:00:59

Had a few things

1:00:59

But that was always

1:01:00

The old music

1:01:01

Old music

1:01:02

Yeah yeah

1:01:02

That was

1:01:03

That wasn't

1:01:03

You know

1:01:04

That wasn't like

1:01:04

Stuff that I was

1:01:06

Interested in listening to

1:01:06

That was old music

1:01:07

And it's just so interesting

1:01:08

That now that old music

1:01:10

Is you know

1:01:12

Collector item

1:01:13

Or you know

1:01:13

That sort of thing

1:01:14

But do you know

1:01:15

I don't know what I was

1:01:17

Saying to you

1:01:17

That I saw a guy

1:01:19

Down the road

1:01:19

Had what looked like

1:01:21

An original copy

1:01:22

Of Dark Side of the Moon

1:01:23

Like an original

1:01:24

Original pressing

1:01:24

Like a four

1:01:25

Five hundred

1:01:26

Quid pressing

1:01:27

Sorry

1:01:28

It was a Freud

1:01:29

Pink Freud

1:01:30

Oh Pink Freud

1:01:31

Dark Side of your mum

1:01:32

I messaged this guy

1:01:38

And I was like

1:01:39

Can you

1:01:39

Because he had a picture

1:01:40

Of the run out

1:01:41

On side A

1:01:42

Yes

1:01:42

Which is really well known

1:01:44

Right

1:01:44

This is like

1:01:45

This is a record

1:01:46

That's worth a fortune

1:01:47

Yeah

1:01:47

And like you don't

1:01:49

I don't know

1:01:49

Like you don't

1:01:50

Come across them

1:01:51

Do you know what I mean

1:01:52

Like everybody knows

1:01:53

About these things

1:01:54

And I messaged this dude

1:01:55

And I was going like

1:01:56

I think you told me

1:01:57

This story before

1:01:58

I said is this really

1:01:59

He said yeah yeah

1:02:00

It's a

1:02:01

I think it's quite an early copy

1:02:03

Yeah

1:02:03

And he got it listed

1:02:04

For twenty quid

1:02:05

Yeah yeah yeah

1:02:05

And I was like

1:02:06

It's like ten miles away

1:02:07

And I was like

1:02:07

I said I'm going to

1:02:09

Can I come

1:02:10

He got a load of other records

1:02:11

They got like some

1:02:11

Wasp records and stuff

1:02:13

He was like

1:02:14

Can I come and have a look

1:02:15

And he's like

1:02:16

Well yeah you can do

1:02:16

If you want to

1:02:17

I said can you send me

1:02:18

A copy of like

1:02:19

The side two run out

1:02:19

Yeah

1:02:20

And then he deleted

1:02:21

All the pictures

1:02:21

Oh

1:02:23

You know I mean

1:02:24

At this point

1:02:24

Like scam

1:02:25

Yeah this feels a bit weird

1:02:26

Yeah

1:02:27

I don't know

1:02:28

Like scamming me out

1:02:29

Of twenty quid

1:02:30

Yeah yeah yeah

1:02:31

Do you know what I mean

1:02:31

It just feels a bit

1:02:32

Dickhead

1:02:33

There are some bad people

1:02:34

There are

1:02:35

Bad bad people

1:02:36

Of all the people

1:02:36

Like sad people

1:02:39

That collect vinyls

1:02:40

Yeah

1:02:40

Do you know what I mean

1:02:41

Yeah yeah

1:02:42

Go and scam somebody

1:02:43

Called Josh

1:02:44

Yeah

1:02:44

He was like

1:02:45

He played American football

1:02:46

And was big

1:02:47

Don't pick on like

1:02:49

You know

1:02:50

We've been bullied

1:02:51

Us nerds

1:02:51

Have been bullied

1:02:52

We've been bullied

1:02:53

Enough already

1:02:53

Don't pick on us

1:02:56

Yeah

1:02:56

It's not fair

1:02:57

Dickhead

1:02:57

Anyway

1:02:59

What's next

1:03:00

Shall we do some facts

1:03:01

We shall

1:03:02

My tablet's not ready

1:03:03

Yeah

1:03:04

Which reminds me

1:03:06

Which reminds me

1:03:06

Actually

1:03:06

When

1:03:07

When

1:03:07

When

1:03:08

When I was a youngling

1:03:10

In

1:03:10

In my job

1:03:11

And I had to

1:03:12

I had to be taught

1:03:13

How to go and

1:03:13

Deliver training

1:03:14

I had a mentor

1:03:15

Called Sean

1:03:16

Sean was a magician

1:03:18

And a stand up comedian

1:03:20

Really funny guy

1:03:21

Yeah

1:03:21

And he was teaching me

1:03:24

How to deliver this

1:03:25

Like training content

1:03:26

Right

1:03:26

Yeah

1:03:27

You have to keep it engaging

1:03:28

And blah blah blah

1:03:29

Anyway

1:03:29

We come back after lunch one day

1:03:31

And the digital whiteboard thing

1:03:32

That we were using

1:03:33

Was just broken

1:03:34

Didn't work

1:03:35

Yeah

1:03:35

And so everyone was

1:03:36

Kind of sitting down

1:03:37

Just turn it off

1:03:38

And turn it on again

1:03:39

We did all that

1:03:39

Turn it off

1:03:40

Turn it back on again

1:03:40

It didn't work

1:03:41

And I was like

1:03:42

Did you do

1:03:43

Henry Rollins on it

1:03:44

Yeah

1:03:44

So I'm going

1:03:45

Dude what are we going to do

1:03:46

Yeah

1:03:46

And he said

1:03:47

Well look

1:03:47

I've messaged the support guys

1:03:50

They'll come and figure it out

1:03:51

In a minute

1:03:51

Yeah

1:03:52

We just need to pad

1:03:53

Right

1:03:53

So watch this

1:03:54

So he just stood up

1:03:56

And started to do magic tricks

1:03:58

And tell jokes

1:03:59

Yes

1:04:00

Yeah

1:04:00

And then he did that

1:04:01

It kept him entertained

1:04:01

For like an hour

1:04:02

Yeah

1:04:03

Dude came in

1:04:04

Did some stuff

1:04:05

And made it work

1:04:05

And then

1:04:06

And I was like

1:04:08

Sitting there

1:04:08

And he was going

1:04:09

He looked at me like

1:04:09

There you go

1:04:10

But I'm not

1:04:12

I'm not a magician

1:04:13

I'm not a magician

1:04:13

Or a comedian

1:04:14

I can't do any of that

1:04:15

Yeah

1:04:16

Yeah

1:04:16

And he was just like

1:04:17

Well you know

1:04:17

Find your thing to do

1:04:19

What

1:04:20

What to me

1:04:21

Worst mentor ever

1:04:24

Very funny guy

1:04:25

I love Sean

1:04:25

Sean if you listen to this

1:04:27

You're awesome

1:04:27

Oh and also

1:04:29

Sean was my mentor

1:04:31

For public speaking

1:04:32

And we were

1:04:35

We're in Prague

1:04:35

And I stood up

1:04:37

In front of like

1:04:37

I don't know

1:04:38

500 people

1:04:39

To talk about this thing

1:04:39

First thing I was doing

1:04:41

Properly crapping myself

1:04:43

Yeah yeah yeah

1:04:43

Sean was with me

1:04:44

In the front row

1:04:45

And I could see him

1:04:45

Right

1:04:46

It was great

1:04:46

And then it's

1:04:47

There's other people

1:04:48

There's another guy

1:04:49

Speaking before me

1:04:50

And it's my turn

1:04:51

And I get up

1:04:52

And I'm dead

1:04:52

Dead nervous

1:04:53

And I look to my mentor

1:04:54

Sean

1:04:55

Yeah

1:04:55

I can't see Sean

1:04:56

Sean's gone

1:04:57

And I thought

1:04:57

Oh maybe he's gone

1:04:58

To the toilet

1:04:58

Or something

1:04:59

Yeah

1:04:59

And I start speaking

1:05:01

And I'm like

1:05:02

Really nervous

1:05:03

And I kind of get

1:05:04

Part way through it

1:05:06

Kind of thing

1:05:06

And then I look up

1:05:07

And we're in like

1:05:08

A hotel lobby

1:05:08

And I suddenly look up

1:05:10

And I realise

1:05:10

The bar's open

1:05:11

Yeah

1:05:11

And Sean's at the bar

1:05:13

He's basically

1:05:16

Just abandoned me

1:05:17

And gone for a pint

1:05:19

Excellent

1:05:19

So there you go

1:05:20

As long as you've got

1:05:21

A mentor who

1:05:21

Who does that

1:05:22

You're in good

1:05:23

Right facts

1:05:25

So released

1:05:27

6th of April 1993

1:05:28

Yes

1:05:28

We talked about

1:05:30

Other stuff

1:05:31

That was released

1:05:31

In 1993

1:05:32

It was a massive

1:05:33

Massive year

1:05:34

First full length

1:05:36

Record on Zoo

1:05:37

Entertainment

1:05:38

Distribution by BMG

1:05:39

A couple of EPs

1:05:40

Before that

1:05:41

So they did

1:05:41

Opia and that

1:05:42

Other one

1:05:42

That I've forgotten

1:05:42

The name of

1:05:43

The numbers

1:05:44

The numbers one

1:05:45

Produced by

1:05:46

Sylvia Massey

1:05:47

With tour

1:05:47

We have already

1:05:49

Discussed how

1:05:50

Awesome Sylvia Massey

1:05:51

Is

1:05:51

If there's one

1:05:52

Thing you do

1:05:53

If there's one

1:05:53

Thing you do

1:05:54

After or

1:05:54

Stop now

1:05:55

Go and look

1:05:57

At Sylvia Massey's

1:05:58

Wikipedia page

1:05:59

There will be

1:06:00

An album on there

1:06:01

That you love

1:06:02

That she's done

1:06:02

She's just epic

1:06:04

Yeah

1:06:05

Runtime is 69 minutes

1:06:08

That's long for you

1:06:09

Although the album's

1:06:10

Not 69 minutes

1:06:11

It's got that long

1:06:11

It's not even a

1:06:12

Secret track is it

1:06:13

It's like fuzzy

1:06:14

It's got Disgustipated

1:06:15

On there

1:06:16

Now it's interesting

1:06:17

A lot of the CDs

1:06:18

Like

1:06:19

Like flood and

1:06:20

Disgustipated

1:06:21

Kind of get

1:06:22

Yeah

1:06:22

Wedged together

1:06:23

And Disgustipated

1:06:24

It's like this

1:06:24

Hidden track

1:06:25

Kind of thing

1:06:25

So it's a bit

1:06:26

Weird depending on

1:06:27

The pressing

1:06:28

That you have

1:06:29

Of the album

1:06:30

Oh right

1:06:31

Because at the end

1:06:31

On the version

1:06:32

That we've got

1:06:32

There's the static

1:06:33

Noise at the end

1:06:34

Of Disgustipated

1:06:35

Which leads to

1:06:36

A little spoken

1:06:37

Bit at the end

1:06:37

That's it

1:06:38

Yeah

1:06:38

Yeah

1:06:38

But so on some

1:06:40

Versions

1:06:40

It's flood

1:06:41

Yeah

1:06:42

And then that

1:06:43

That plays out

1:06:44

Oh wow

1:06:44

Yeah yeah

1:06:45

Just a bit weird

1:06:45

Line up

1:06:47

Maynard James Keenan

1:06:48

On the vocals

1:06:49

Adam Jones

1:06:50

Guitar

1:06:50

Danny Carey

1:06:52

Drums

1:06:52

And Paul D'Amour

1:06:53

On bass

1:06:53

This is the only

1:06:54

Album with Paul D'Amour

1:06:55

Is it

1:06:56

Okay right

1:06:56

Right

1:06:57

I think

1:06:58

Danny Carey

1:06:58

Is spoken about

1:06:59

With such reverence

1:07:00

In the drum community

1:07:01

The thing is

1:07:03

Like I played

1:07:05

The drums at school

1:07:06

Yeah

1:07:06

And we played drums

1:07:07

On songs like

1:07:09

Poison

1:07:09

Yeah

1:07:10

And I found that

1:07:11

Quite hard

1:07:11

Yes

1:07:12

Right

1:07:12

Yeah

1:07:12

This

1:07:13

No

1:07:15

Not a hope

1:07:17

Yeah

1:07:17

Not a hope

1:07:18

I don't think

1:07:19

I could

1:07:20

Do you know

1:07:21

What I mean

1:07:21

Like

1:07:22

Yeah

1:07:22

I don't know

1:07:23

Drumming for me

1:07:24

Is like a feel thing

1:07:25

I don't think

1:07:27

You could feel

1:07:28

Your way through this

1:07:29

It's so

1:07:29

There's only one drummer

1:07:30

That can do this

1:07:31

And that's

1:07:31

Yeah

1:07:32

Yeah

1:07:32

Yeah

1:07:32

It's just

1:07:33

Excellent

1:07:34

And then

1:07:35

Justin Chancellor

1:07:36

Took over

1:07:37

For bass

1:07:38

Afterwards

1:07:38

Guest cameo

1:07:42

So Henry Rollins

1:07:42

Did the spoken word

1:07:43

On bottom

1:07:44

That we talked about

1:07:45

It's described

1:07:48

As a psychological break

1:07:49

Which I like

1:07:50

A lot

1:07:51

So

1:07:51

But it's a cool track

1:07:53

I really like that

1:07:54

And I think

1:07:54

I think it works

1:07:55

Incredibly well

1:07:56

Like you

1:07:56

We talked about

1:07:57

Before

1:07:57

The

1:07:58

It's like

1:08:01

The soundscape

1:08:01

Isn't it

1:08:02

If it's kind of

1:08:02

The atmosphere

1:08:04

On them

1:08:04

And it just

1:08:05

Works really well

1:08:05

Largely done in

1:08:06

Drop D

1:08:07

Yeah

1:08:07

Which is the

1:08:08

Best tuning

1:08:09

Really dry

1:08:10

Yeah

1:08:10

Massively dynamic

1:08:12

So not overly

1:08:13

Compressed

1:08:14

That's interesting

1:08:15

Actually

1:08:15

Because yeah

1:08:16

I always look at

1:08:17

The waveforms

1:08:18

As we're

1:08:18

Editing this

1:08:19

Thing together

1:08:20

Yeah

1:08:20

And it's

1:08:21

Interesting

1:08:21

You mentioned

1:08:21

That

1:08:22

Because the

1:08:22

Quiet bits

1:08:23

You can hardly

1:08:23

See

1:08:24

Yeah

1:08:24

Yeah

1:08:24

But I think

1:08:25

It's interesting

1:08:26

Because if you

1:08:27

Like I'm trying to

1:08:28

Think of other

1:08:29

Albums that were

1:08:29

Released around

1:08:30

This time

1:08:31

Chaos AD

1:08:32

Yeah

1:08:32

Would be a good

1:08:33

One

1:08:33

Even Carcass

1:08:34

I mean the

1:08:35

Heartwork album

1:08:35

Is quite compressed

1:08:36

I think

1:08:37

Yeah

1:08:37

Yeah

1:08:37

So if you

1:08:39

Listen to a track

1:08:40

From Heartwork

1:08:42

And then

1:08:42

Anything from

1:08:43

Undertow

1:08:44

Yeah

1:08:44

Undertow record

1:08:46

Sounds a bit

1:08:46

Quiet and a bit

1:08:47

Yes

1:08:48

A bit thin

1:08:48

Yeah

1:08:48

But

1:08:49

Turn the volume

1:08:51

Up

1:08:51

Yeah

1:08:51

For the heart

1:08:52

Turn the volume

1:08:53

Up on

1:08:54

Undertow

1:08:55

And it's

1:08:55

It comes to

1:08:56

Life

1:08:56

Yeah

1:08:56

For me

1:08:58

That's what

1:08:58

We lost

1:08:59

That's what

1:08:59

The loudness

1:09:00

Wars broke

1:09:01

Yes

1:09:01

That ability

1:09:02

To have an

1:09:03

Album just

1:09:04

Like envelop

1:09:05

You

1:09:05

Because what

1:09:06

Happens when

1:09:06

You turn the

1:09:07

When you turn

1:09:08

The compression

1:09:09

Up

1:09:09

You can't

1:09:10

Have an album

1:09:11

On that loud

1:09:11

It gets

1:09:12

Just the whole

1:09:12

Thing becomes

1:09:13

You know

1:09:13

Everything

1:09:14

Just gets a bit

1:09:16

Distorted

1:09:16

And a bit

1:09:17

A bit nasty

1:09:17

Whereas if

1:09:18

You've got

1:09:19

A record

1:09:20

That's produced

1:09:20

Like this

1:09:21

Yes

1:09:21

You can turn

1:09:22

The volume

1:09:23

Up

1:09:23

And you get

1:09:24

The loudness

1:09:25

And the quietness

1:09:25

And I think

1:09:26

That's bloody

1:09:26

Brilliant

1:09:27

Yeah

1:09:27

The track

1:09:30

That broke

1:09:30

The band

1:09:30

Was Sober

1:09:31

Yeah

1:09:31

So that was

1:09:32

The first

1:09:32

Single off

1:09:33

This record

1:09:33

Stop motion

1:09:35

Video

1:09:35

Again people

1:09:35

Really revere

1:09:36

That song

1:09:36

Oh it's epic

1:09:37

Don't they

1:09:37

Sober

1:09:38

Yeah stop motion

1:09:39

Video which I

1:09:39

Thought was really

1:09:40

Really cool

1:09:40

Yeah

1:09:40

It was created

1:09:41

By the guitarist

1:09:43

Adam Jones

1:09:43

He'd got like

1:09:44

A graphical

1:09:44

Background

1:09:45

He did

1:09:45

Tons of artwork

1:09:46

And stuff

1:09:47

Yeah so he's

1:09:48

Behind the artwork

1:09:48

The records

1:09:49

And also the

1:09:50

Videos isn't he

1:09:50

He's the kind

1:09:51

Of visual guy

1:09:52

Exactly yeah

1:09:53

Which I thought

1:09:53

Was really

1:09:54

Really cool

1:09:54

And the second

1:09:55

Single prison sex

1:09:56

Got like a quarter

1:09:59

Of the play

1:10:00

Of Sober

1:10:01

Because it got

1:10:02

Like all kinds

1:10:04

Of censoring

1:10:06

Yeah yeah

1:10:06

And in fact the

1:10:07

Band got in a

1:10:08

Whole bunch of

1:10:08

Weird trouble

1:10:09

With this right

1:10:11

So the artwork

1:10:13

So Adam Jones

1:10:14

So Adam Jones

1:10:16

So Adam Jones

1:10:16

Created that

1:10:17

Ribcage

1:10:17

Cover

1:10:17

That kind of

1:10:18

Red

1:10:18

It got censored

1:10:21

Now

1:10:21

If you go to

1:10:23

Riffology.co

1:10:24

Which is our

1:10:25

Blog

1:10:26

And you find the

1:10:27

Blog for

1:10:27

Undertow

1:10:28

I've put in there

1:10:29

The censored

1:10:30

Artwork

1:10:30

Yes

1:10:31

And it's like

1:10:31

A

1:10:32

What they did

1:10:32

Was they

1:10:33

Removed the

1:10:34

Red ribcage

1:10:35

And it's like a

1:10:36

Barcode

1:10:37

Oh right

1:10:38

Okay

1:10:38

But on the

1:10:39

Inner lining

1:10:39

Notes

1:10:40

Yeah

1:10:40

There's a whole

1:10:42

Bunch

1:10:42

Let me see

1:10:43

There's a whole

1:10:43

Bunch of

1:10:44

Stuff on there

1:10:45

And it says

1:10:45

Like it says

1:10:46

Tall undertow

1:10:47

On the

1:10:47

Like the

1:10:48

Spine

1:10:49

And then it's

1:10:49

I'm showing you

1:10:50

The

1:10:50

Yeah yeah

1:10:51

Sort of like a

1:10:52

Thing on there

1:10:52

But

1:10:53

So this is on

1:10:54

The blog

1:10:55

Yeah I'm just

1:10:56

Scrolling up to

1:10:57

The bit on the

1:10:57

Blog

1:10:57

But also you got

1:10:58

This on the

1:10:59

Inside

1:11:00

Yeah yeah

1:11:00

And it says

1:11:01

It came to our

1:11:02

Attention recently

1:11:03

That many stores

1:11:04

Across our fine

1:11:05

And open minded

1:11:06

Nation would

1:11:06

Not stock

1:11:07

Undertow

1:11:08

Because of

1:11:08

Our explicit

1:11:09

Artwork

1:11:10

Although we

1:11:11

Loathe being

1:11:11

Censored we

1:11:12

Still want you

1:11:13

To hear our

1:11:13

Music so

1:11:14

We took it

1:11:15

Out however

1:11:15

It's still

1:11:16

Available to

1:11:17

You at no

1:11:18

Extra cost

1:11:18

Fill out the

1:11:19

Form

1:11:19

Stick it in

1:11:20

An envelope

1:11:21

And we

1:11:21

Will send

1:11:22

You the

1:11:23

Original

1:11:23

Artwork

1:11:24

Love

1:11:24

Tool

1:11:24

Wow

1:11:25

So all of

1:11:27

That stuff

1:11:27

Is on the

1:11:27

On the

1:11:28

On our

1:11:29

Blog on

1:11:29

Riffology

1:11:30

Dot co

1:11:30

If you are

1:11:31

That way

1:11:31

Inclined

1:11:32

So that's

1:11:33

Really interesting

1:11:34

To me

1:11:34

That prison

1:11:35

Sex

1:11:35

Kindly you

1:11:36

Can understand

1:11:36

That

1:11:37

The album

1:11:37

Cover

1:11:38

I cannot

1:11:38

Understand why

1:11:39

This was

1:11:40

Censored

1:11:40

That's a bit

1:11:42

Weird

1:11:42

So

1:11:42

I don't know

1:11:44

Which parts of

1:11:45

America did

1:11:45

That but

1:11:46

I don't think

1:11:47

We got that

1:11:48

Over here

1:11:48

In Europe

1:11:48

The same

1:11:49

Parts

1:11:49

They did

1:11:49

The perennial

1:11:50

Advisory

1:11:50

Sticker

1:11:51

Which made

1:11:51

All the

1:11:52

Kids

1:11:53

Want to

1:11:53

Buy those

1:11:54

Records

1:11:54

Like having ribcages

1:11:54

Was like

1:11:55

Yeah you don't want a ribcage on your record do you

1:11:57

Don't want that

1:11:58

Yeah anyway a bit weird

1:12:00

That

1:12:00

Studio stuff

1:12:02

Christians against ribcages

1:12:03

They're against everything aren't they

1:12:09

Yeah

1:12:09

Someone asked me this week

1:12:11

Are they just going off

1:12:12

Christians against ribs

1:12:13

Someone said to me this week

1:12:16

What religion are you

1:12:17

Yeah

1:12:18

I don't know

1:12:19

Yeah

1:12:19

You must know

1:12:21

I don't

1:12:22

No

1:12:22

I don't know

1:12:23

I'm not anti religion

1:12:24

No

1:12:25

It's like

1:12:26

I don't know

1:12:27

I like loads of bits

1:12:28

Of all of the different ones

1:12:30

It's all good bits

1:12:32

I can't even

1:12:33

I've got my

1:12:34

I've got my

1:12:34

Williams Formula 1 top on

1:12:35

Your religion is F1

1:12:36

I love

1:12:37

Williams Formula 1 team

1:12:38

Yeah yeah yeah

1:12:39

If you ask me my favourite Formula 1

1:12:40

I couldn't tell you

1:12:41

No

1:12:41

I just

1:12:42

I don't know

1:12:43

They've all got good bits

1:12:44

Yeah I don't

1:12:45

I just don't know

1:12:46

And bad bits

1:12:47

And that's the way it is

1:12:48

Just

1:12:48

Is that an okay question to ask people

1:12:51

What religion are you

1:12:52

Like

1:12:52

Like

1:12:53

What's your favourite football team

1:12:54

Yeah

1:12:55

Yeah

1:12:56

That seems alright

1:12:57

Yeah yeah

1:12:57

Or

1:12:57

What's your favourite

1:12:59

Or what's that singer

1:13:01

The skinny

1:13:01

One that does singing

1:13:03

She's great tonight

1:13:05

You know the one

1:13:06

You know the one

1:13:07

The skinny singer

1:13:08

The skinny singer

1:13:09

She does

1:13:10

She does

1:13:11

Country singing

1:13:13

Oh yeah

1:13:13

Is it country

1:13:13

Beyonce

1:13:16

No

1:13:17

She does country sort of

1:13:18

No the other one

1:13:19

Britney

1:13:21

No

1:13:22

Christina Aguilera

1:13:23

Bit like Britney

1:13:24

More modern

1:13:24

Oh more modern than Britney

1:13:26

Yeah

1:13:27

Oh god

1:13:28

Not Celine Dion

1:13:28

She's older

1:13:29

Did you know

1:13:30

She's married

1:13:30

Married to an American footballist

1:13:32

Oh Taylor Swift

1:13:33

Taylor Swift

1:13:34

Yes

1:13:34

Like you could

1:13:35

I think you could say

1:13:36

What's your favourite

1:13:37

Taylor Swift album

1:13:37

Yeah

1:13:38

I don't think you can ask

1:13:40

What is your

1:13:41

What's your favourite religion

1:13:42

I don't know

1:13:43

I don't know

1:13:45

Anyway that was

1:13:45

That was a question

1:13:46

That I got asked this week

1:13:46

Yeah

1:13:47

The answer's Buddhism though

1:13:48

I don't drink

1:13:49

Yeah

1:13:50

So this week's been hysterical

1:13:51

Yeah

1:13:51

So you go out

1:13:52

They all drink

1:13:53

And they're all on

1:13:53

They're all on like

1:13:54

Expenses and stuff

1:13:55

So they're all

1:13:55

By the time I get in

1:13:56

They're all slaughtered

1:13:57

Yeah

1:13:57

Yeah

1:13:58

Yeah

1:13:58

Yeah

1:13:58

And then

1:13:59

It's just like

1:14:00

I got hugged a lot

1:14:00

I hate

1:14:00

I don't

1:14:01

A I don't like being hugged

1:14:02

Yeah

1:14:02

And I've discovered

1:14:03

I don't like being asked

1:14:04

What religion I am

1:14:05

There we go

1:14:05

So I don't know

1:14:06

Either of those things

1:14:06

Actually I've said Buddhism

1:14:08

Buddhism's strictly

1:14:10

Probably not a religion

1:14:11

What is it?

1:14:11

More of a philosophy

1:14:12

Oh

1:14:13

Or a philosophical system

1:14:15

Is it?

1:14:15

Yeah

1:14:16

Perhaps like lacrimology

1:14:18

Lacrimology

1:14:20

I would love it

1:14:21

If he totally made that up

1:14:22

Yeah

1:14:22

Yeah

1:14:22

I'm sure he did

1:14:23

I'm sure he made it up

1:14:24

Maynard

1:14:24

He's trouble

1:14:26

So anyway

1:14:27

Disgustipated

1:14:28

Back to the facts

1:14:30

Yes

1:14:30

Tour breakthrough

1:14:32

So they were on the

1:14:35

Lollapalooza tour

1:14:37

1993

1:14:37

On the second stage

1:14:39

They got so big

1:14:41

During that

1:14:42

Yeah

1:14:42

That they were

1:14:44

Like they were

1:14:46

There was a lot of talk

1:14:47

Of bumping them

1:14:47

To the main stage

1:14:48

Oh really?

1:14:48

Wow

1:14:49

So this is kind of

1:14:49

A proper breakthrough artist

1:14:51

Yeah yeah yeah

1:14:51

They're not well known

1:14:52

Yeah yeah

1:14:52

And the crowds

1:14:54

Were so big for them

1:14:55

That they were

1:14:55

Really really close

1:14:57

To bumping them

1:14:57

But it's really quick

1:14:59

1:15:00

Yeah

1:15:01

For me

1:15:02

This record doesn't fit

1:15:03

No

1:15:04

Doesn't fit the tone

1:15:05

Doesn't fit the

1:15:06

The world

1:15:08

Like if you were

1:15:08

But they weren't big

1:15:09

Over here were they?

1:15:10

No

1:15:10

No one really heard

1:15:11

Of them over here

1:15:12

You were an A&R guy

1:15:13

Right

1:15:13

You were working

1:15:14

At a record label

1:15:14

You want to

1:15:16

I mean

1:15:16

You want to sign

1:15:17

You want to sign

1:15:18

Nirvana

1:15:18

You know what I mean

1:15:19

You're looking for

1:15:20

Like

1:15:21

You want hits

1:15:23

Pearl Jam

1:15:24

You're looking for

1:15:25

Soundgarden

1:15:26

You're looking for

1:15:26

These kind of

1:15:27

That's where the world's

1:15:28

Heading

1:15:29

Right

1:15:29

This kind of

1:15:30

You're not looking

1:15:32

For like

1:15:33

Like weird

1:15:34

Six

1:15:35

Eight

1:15:35

Spoken word

1:15:36

By Henry Rollins

1:15:37

Yeah

1:15:37

Yeah

1:15:38

Yeah

1:15:38

But people were

1:15:40

People wanted it

1:15:41

Yeah

1:15:41

There was this heavy music

1:15:42

This kind of

1:15:42

This kind of gap

1:15:44

That was

1:15:44

You know

1:15:45

Coming through

1:15:46

Like if you look at where

1:15:47

Like Slayer were

1:15:49

And like where the

1:15:49

Kind of big

1:15:50

Like Metallica were

1:15:51

Yeah

1:15:51

You know

1:15:52

They were like

1:15:52

Metallica were in

1:15:53

Load reload land

1:15:54

It was shocking

1:15:55

Yes

1:15:55

You know

1:15:56

It's not this

1:15:57

No

1:15:57

No

1:15:58

So I just think

1:16:00

It's phenomenal

1:16:00

They even got

1:16:01

Signed

1:16:02

Do you know

1:16:03

What I mean

1:16:03

It's like this

1:16:04

It feels like

1:16:05

It's so not

1:16:06

On

1:16:08

In fashion

1:16:10

Yeah

1:16:10

This wasn't like

1:16:12

Super fashionable music

1:16:13

At all

1:16:13

Almost kind of

1:16:14

Made it

1:16:15

Fashionable

1:16:15

They kind of

1:16:16

Carved out

1:16:16

Their own space

1:16:17

I think

1:16:17

Which I think

1:16:18

Is really

1:16:18

Really cool

1:16:18

But yeah

1:16:21

Interestingly

1:16:22

Their success

1:16:25

They're almost like

1:16:26

Linear

1:16:26

Right

1:16:26

Everything they did

1:16:28

Just got bigger

1:16:28

And better

1:16:29

And bigger

1:16:29

And more fans

1:16:30

And it was like

1:16:31

They just couldn't

1:16:32

Seem to put a

1:16:33

Put a foot wrong

1:16:34

And it's interesting

1:16:36

That you joked

1:16:37

About the idea of

1:16:37

Religion

1:16:38

Or a cult

1:16:38

Because

1:16:39

That's what

1:16:40

That's what tall

1:16:41

Fans kind of

1:16:42

Are

1:16:43

To a certain extent

1:16:43

There's that lovely

1:16:44

Meme

1:16:45

Where

1:16:46

There's that lovely

1:16:48

Meme

1:16:49

Where that guy

1:16:49

Carries a

1:16:50

Oh

1:16:52

What's he carrying

1:16:53

Around

1:16:53

He's carrying

1:16:54

Like a

1:16:54

Essentially

1:16:59

The meme

1:16:59

Is like

1:16:59

This guy

1:16:59

Gets stopped

1:17:00

In the video

1:17:00

And asked him

1:17:01

And he starts

1:17:01

Talking about

1:17:02

Like

1:17:02

Number progressions

1:17:04

And stuff

1:17:04

Can I talk to you

1:17:05

About how great

1:17:06

Tall are please

1:17:06

And there is a bit

1:17:08

Of that about

1:17:08

Tall friends

1:17:09

Like you say

1:17:10

There's not

1:17:10

Do you know

1:17:11

What I mean

1:17:11

The music

1:17:13

Is actually

1:17:14

It's quite immediate

1:17:15

And easy

1:17:16

To listen to

1:17:17

Yeah

1:17:17

But you scratch

1:17:18

Beneath the surface

1:17:18

And the weird

1:17:19

Time signatures

1:17:20

Are there

1:17:21

And then the

1:17:21

Lyrics are

1:17:22

Like interesting

1:17:23

And weird

1:17:24

And he talks

1:17:25

About odd stuff

1:17:26

And you know

1:17:27

There's always

1:17:27

Bits in there

1:17:28

Where you know

1:17:29

There's always

1:17:29

Like a story

1:17:30

Behind the songs

1:17:31

And everything

1:17:32

Which you don't

1:17:32

Know whether

1:17:32

It's true or not

1:17:33

Whether it's a

1:17:34

Concert

1:17:34

Made it up

1:17:35

But yeah

1:17:36

But there is

1:17:36

And they're like

1:17:37

So I think

1:17:38

I don't know

1:17:39

I think it's

1:17:39

Fascinating

1:17:40

But tall fans

1:17:41

Are like that

1:17:41

They tend

1:17:42

They know

1:17:42

All this stuff

1:17:43

Yeah

1:17:43

They're into

1:17:43

The cult of it

1:17:44

Yeah

1:17:44

The lore

1:17:45

Cold's the wrong word

1:17:46

But the lore

1:17:47

Of the band

1:17:48

Yeah

1:17:48

Yeah

1:17:48

Absolutely

1:17:48

Like Sleep Token

1:17:49

Are a bit like that

1:17:50

Yeah

1:17:50

I think

1:17:51

There's that kind

1:17:51

Of thing too

1:17:52

And yeah

1:17:55

An album was released

1:17:56

On the same year

1:17:57

As this

1:17:57

Like 93 was a big year

1:17:58

But you had like

1:17:59

You know

1:17:59

Siamese Dream

1:18:00

And In Utero

1:18:01

And Chaos AD

1:18:02

Yeah

1:18:02

Some really really

1:18:03

Big good heart work

1:18:04

Came out that year

1:18:05

As well

1:18:05

So it was like

1:18:07

A big year

1:18:07

Yeah

1:18:08

And you know

1:18:09

If you

1:18:09

If you were asking me

1:18:11

At the beginning of 93

1:18:13

Would like a

1:18:16

Like a semi-proggy

1:18:17

Yeah

1:18:18

Not widly-widly

1:18:18

Uber-Guitary

1:18:19

But like

1:18:20

Like a weird

1:18:21

Atmospheric-y

1:18:22

Proggy record

1:18:23

Do well

1:18:24

No

1:18:25

I wouldn't

1:18:25

I don't think

1:18:26

It would have done

1:18:26

I mean this is like

1:18:27

Not Korn era

1:18:28

Like weird stuff

1:18:30

This is

1:18:30

Yeah

1:18:31

Yeah

1:18:31

Yeah

1:18:31

93

1:18:32

It's really early

1:18:33

Yeah

1:18:33

But yeah

1:18:35

They just seem to

1:18:36

They seem to

1:18:37

I think they kind of

1:18:38

Carved like

1:18:39

When we talked about

1:18:40

Black Sabbath

1:18:41

Creating that space

1:18:42

Yes

1:18:43

And doing

1:18:43

They're just like

1:18:44

That was just who they are

1:18:46

That was the music they made

1:18:48

Yeah

1:18:48

And this kind of bubble

1:18:49

Built around them

1:18:50

And then all these other bands

1:18:52

Yeah

1:18:52

Yeah

1:18:52

You know like

1:18:53

Connected to that

1:18:54

And we're like

1:18:54

Oh that's really cool

1:18:55

We you know

1:18:56

Yeah let's do some of that

1:18:57

And it like splintered off

1:18:58

Into all these different

1:18:59

Sub-genres and stuff like that

1:19:00

Yeah

1:19:00

I kind of feel

1:19:02

There's a little bit of that

1:19:03

Going on here

1:19:03

Where this record

1:19:05

Or not necessarily this record

1:19:06

Maybe Opiate as well

1:19:07

And then this one

1:19:08

Kind of solidified it

1:19:09

A little bit

1:19:09

Yeah

1:19:09

And then you've got

1:19:10

A bunch of other bands

1:19:11

That are kind of like

1:19:12

Oh actually

1:19:13

Yeah yeah yeah

1:19:13

I like that

1:19:14

I like that dark tone

1:19:15

I like the fact

1:19:16

Yeah yeah yeah

1:19:16

And then all this other stuff

1:19:18

Kind of flows off the back of this

1:19:20

Yes

1:19:21

But yeah

1:19:22

They definitely had

1:19:23

This kind of thing around them

1:19:24

And then they were not

1:19:25

It wasn't copied

1:19:26

It didn't feel like it

1:19:27

No

1:19:28

This felt like their scene

1:19:29

Yeah yeah yeah yeah

1:19:30

Yeah

1:19:31

So anyway

1:19:32

That's it for facts

1:19:33

Facts facts facts facts

1:19:34

Facts

1:19:35

So we're going to have

1:19:36

Prison sex now

1:19:36

And then we're going to

1:19:38

And then we're going to

1:19:42

Discuss next week's album

1:19:44

Oh I've changed my mind

1:19:45

I'm so excited about

1:19:47

Next week's album

1:19:47

I've got

1:19:48

I can't

1:19:49

We'll talk about it after this

1:19:50

Have you had to tell me

1:19:51

No

1:19:51

Kind of

1:19:53

Play the thing

1:19:55

And we'll come back in a minute

1:19:55

It took so long to remember

1:20:09

It took so long to remember

1:20:11

Just what happened

1:20:12

I was so young and fast to live

1:20:15

Didn't know what I remember

1:20:17

But I'm breathing so hard and guess I'm still alive

1:20:22

Even the signs seem to tell me

1:20:25

Always got my hands down and my hands down and my eyes closed and my toes right on my mind

1:20:35

I do

1:20:36

I do unto others

1:20:37

What has been done to me

1:20:40

I do unto others

1:20:41

What has been done to you

1:20:44

I'm treading water

1:20:46

I need to sleep a while

1:20:49

My land and mother

1:20:50

You look so precious for what you

1:20:53

Won't you come on

1:20:55

Up close to the

1:20:58

Else we know still

1:21:00

I can swear on you

1:21:02

I need you to feel this

1:21:06

I can't stand to burn too long

1:21:11

Release his son of me

1:21:14

Oh, what a sweet moment I'm home.

1:21:23

Too good to me now, what has been done to me?

1:21:31

Too good to me now, what has been done?

1:21:35

Your breathing's up, I guess you'll be still alive.

1:21:40

Even the suns seem to tell me how it was, won't you?

1:21:45

Won't you come on up closer?

1:21:49

Oh, so not yours, I can smell you.

1:21:53

I need you to feel this.

1:21:57

I need this to make me cool.

1:22:02

Release inside of me.

1:22:05

Have you a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:10

Have you a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:14

Holy, this one, holy, medium with no peace of mind.

1:22:26

That your hands are bound and your hands are down.

1:22:32

And your eyes fall.

1:22:34

It looks precious now.

1:22:36

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:46

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:48

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:49

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:51

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:53

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:55

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:22:57

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:20

I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this

1:23:28

Sheer blood and come on my hands

1:23:32

I'll come round once I go

1:23:50

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:51

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:52

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:53

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:54

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:55

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:56

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:57

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:58

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:23:59

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:00

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:01

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:02

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:03

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:05

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:06

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:07

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:08

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:09

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:10

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:11

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:12

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:13

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:14

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:15

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:16

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:17

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:18

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:20

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:23

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:24

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:25

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:26

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:27

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:28

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:29

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:30

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:31

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:32

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:33

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:34

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:35

You're a witness of blood and less can be trusted of?

1:24:36

That's a sense of humor.

1:24:37

But honestly, if you met those guys, if you met Maynard, he was a hoot.

1:24:41

He was doing stand-up comedy at clubs in LA at the time that we were recording that record.

1:24:48

And the lyrics of the Tool records are very surprising if you actually know what they mean.

1:24:55

And then the artwork on the albums too.

1:24:58

there's a lot of hidden meanings.

1:25:00

And on the spine of the CD, you'll see little pictures of like, "Whoa, what's that?"

1:25:06

You know, a lot of mysterious imagery that they packed into those records.

1:25:11

Very good.

1:25:12

Very good.

1:25:13

Are we done?

1:25:15

Yeah.

1:25:16

I like editing.

1:25:18

I like frogs.

1:25:20

You would take good editing.

1:25:22

I have to say you would take good editing.

1:25:23

I like it.

1:25:24

I like doing it.

1:25:25

You would take good at it.

1:25:26

You know, when you see people that like really love what they're doing.

1:25:31

Yeah.

1:25:32

And they kind of like zone into it.

1:25:34

Yeah, yeah.

1:25:35

There's...

1:25:36

If you...

1:25:37

It must be one of the most privileged things in the world to find that thing.

1:25:41

Yeah.

1:25:42

You know?

1:25:43

Because there are people...

1:25:44

They're normal people probably.

1:25:45

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:25:46

Never know what that feels like.

1:25:48

Never know what it's like to be...

1:25:50

Like for me, it's always been code or maths or like, you know, nerdy stuff like that.

1:25:55

Like your day can disappear.

1:25:56

You...

1:25:57

Yeah.

1:25:58

Like some mornings I get to my desk and I get my cup of tea and I start and I'll get so

1:26:01

deep into a thing.

1:26:03

Yeah.

1:26:04

You kind of...

1:26:05

The next thing I know, like the kids are back and it's four o'clock.

1:26:07

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:26:08

My tea's like half drunk and it's cold.

1:26:10

Yeah.

1:26:11

And you've just been like...

1:26:12

You've just got locked into something.

1:26:13

Yeah.

1:26:14

Yeah.

1:26:15

The rabbit hole and your legs are stiff and it's all a bit weird when you stand up.

1:26:17

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:26:18

Yeah.

1:26:19

But it's just this...

1:26:20

I don't know.

1:26:21

It's just this incredible state to get into.

1:26:22

Yeah, yeah.

1:26:23

And you get that when you're editing.

1:26:24

I do.

1:26:25

I absolutely love it.

1:26:26

I love it.

1:26:27

I love it.

1:26:28

Yeah, you're in there and there's nothing else.

1:26:29

Yeah.

1:26:30

this chronology, this story out of these blocks of chaos.

1:26:34

Yeah.

1:26:35

I love it.

1:26:36

I like doing a video as well.

1:26:38

I don't really like filming.

1:26:39

I'm not into that.

1:26:40

Yeah.

1:26:41

Or I do like recording music.

1:26:43

Yeah.

1:26:44

But I really like taking the blocks of there could be chaos.

1:26:48

Yeah.

1:26:49

Like the interviews.

1:26:50

Yeah.

1:26:51

I like the puzzle of like knowing where they fit and how they fit in the story.

1:26:55

And I like it.

1:26:56

What's really fun for me is obviously I'm here when we make it.

1:26:59

Yeah.

1:27:00

And then when I go home and listen to it.

1:27:02

Yeah.

1:27:03

It sounds nothing like.

1:27:04

Well, not nothing like that.

1:27:05

Yeah.

1:27:06

But it's it grows into this thing.

1:27:07

Yeah.

1:27:08

Yeah.

1:27:09

It's not like we're just having the chat when we're here.

1:27:11

Yeah.

1:27:12

It's just us waffling.

1:27:13

Yeah.

1:27:14

And then you stitch it over into this thing that's like entertaining.

1:27:18

I like it.

1:27:19

You're still good.

1:27:20

That's the bit I like.

1:27:21

Yeah.

1:27:22

And if you've gotten this far, so do you.

1:27:23

Thank you very much for joining us.

1:27:25

It's it's incredibly, you know, we're incredibly privileged to have you with us.

1:27:30

So thank you very much.

1:27:31

There's more of you joining us as well, which is crazy.

1:27:33

Like each week.

1:27:34

It is weekly, isn't it?

1:27:35

Every week.

1:27:36

We're looking at the numbers going.

1:27:37

Yeah.

1:27:38

It's weekly.

1:27:39

We do it weekly.

1:27:40

Yeah.

1:27:41

It is.

1:27:42

It's it's lovely.

1:27:43

The show's getting busier and more if you were listening.

1:27:45

And yeah, for that.

1:27:46

I mean, it's great.

1:27:47

Yeah, really great.

1:27:48

So thank you.

1:27:49

Thank you very much for joining us.

1:27:50

And obviously, I think people are sharing is with their friends and have a good time.

1:27:54

We were contemplating doing some merch and doing some t-shirts and things.

1:27:57

But we were about a year into us contemplating that.

1:28:01

I've got the idea in my head, but I don't know quite how to do it.

1:28:06

What merch would you like?

1:28:08

Yeah.

1:28:09

Tell us.

1:28:10

Tell us what merch you'd like.

1:28:11

Just like Riffology, jock straps, whatever else.

1:28:15

Beanies.

1:28:16

I like a beanie.

1:28:17

Yeah.

1:28:18

I don't really wear a bit.

1:28:19

I wear baseball caps.

1:28:20

Do you know what people will want?

1:28:21

What they want.

1:28:22

They'll want long, thin, hot water bottles.

1:28:23

That's what they want.

1:28:24

And it'll say Riffology all the way down and you can snuggle up to a Riffology hot water bottle.

1:28:28

No, you're going to have to do that.

1:28:29

You'll have to get a photo of it and superimpose Riffology onto it.

1:28:32

I bet someone in China can make it for us.

1:28:34

They can make anything, won't they?

1:28:36

Yeah.

1:28:37

Imagine describing what I want.

1:28:39

Yeah.

1:28:40

Like a long, thin, hot water bottle.

1:28:42

Yeah.

1:28:43

No, it's not a penis.

1:28:44

It's...

1:28:45

What should we do next?

1:28:47

Right.

1:28:48

Well, it's interesting because you were like in different parts of the world where you

1:28:53

and I were today.

1:28:54

Simultaneously.

1:28:55

Simultaneously.

1:28:56

Chose the next band.

1:28:57

But then...

1:28:58

Yeah.

1:28:59

Both changed our mind while we were here.

1:29:01

Which is strange.

1:29:02

Did we change our mind?

1:29:03

Yeah.

1:29:04

Because we said hole.

1:29:05

Yeah, we did.

1:29:06

We said hole.

1:29:07

Because I was at Brew today.

1:29:08

I played a gig.

1:29:09

Yeah.

1:29:10

And Celebrity Skin came on.

1:29:11

I was like, we've got to do hole.

1:29:12

Why have we not done the hole yet?

1:29:13

That riff.

1:29:14

That...

1:29:15

It's wicked.

1:29:16

Probably one of the best riffs.

1:29:17

Yeah.

1:29:18

And then you started playing a song.

1:29:19

Yeah.

1:29:20

And you went, we should probably look at this next.

1:29:21

And I went, no way.

1:29:22

No way is this happening.

1:29:24

Like where...

1:29:25

Where there's that serendipitous kind of...

1:29:26

I want to do...

1:29:27

There's a whole bunch of albums that I want to do and I've just been...

1:29:29

You know, I had a lot of time.

1:29:31

Like to get from where we live to Scotland on the train and back.

1:29:34

It takes about 10 days.

1:29:35

Yeah.

1:29:36

It's forever.

1:29:37

It's really boring on the train.

1:29:40

And the internet doesn't work very well.

1:29:42

So I listened to a lot of stuff that I'd got on my phone.

1:29:45

And there were a few albums that really...

1:29:46

Or a few tracks of albums that really stood out to me.

1:29:48

And I just thought we've got to cover them.

1:29:50

One is Live Through This.

1:29:52

Yeah.

1:29:53

I'm whole...

1:29:54

Yeah.

1:29:55

Got to do that.

1:29:56

I think Bricks Are Heavy by L7.

1:29:58

Yeah.

1:29:59

Got to do that.

1:30:00

I also really want to do...

1:30:02

Do Little by the Pixies.

1:30:04

Yeah.

1:30:05

Yeah.

1:30:06

I don't know why.

1:30:07

There's just something about those three...

1:30:08

Yeah.

1:30:09

They're the ones who died into it.

1:30:10

...that's leapt out to me this week.

1:30:11

And I just thought, do you know what?

1:30:12

I think we should...

1:30:13

Because then when we were just talking just then before we hit record again,

1:30:17

you were saying that.

1:30:19

And then I went, well, let's go chronological.

1:30:20

Let's do the Pixies first.

1:30:22

Yeah.

1:30:23

And now you're saying that.

1:30:24

I'm going, we don't have to stick to the chronological rules.

1:30:27

We do what we want.

1:30:28

Because it's our podcast, we kind of make...

1:30:31

We basically make all our own rules and then break them anyway.

1:30:34

So...

1:30:35

So, Do Little was 1989.

1:30:38

Yeah.

1:30:39

Live Through This was 1994.

1:30:42

Yeah.

1:30:43

And then Bricks Are Heavy was 1992.

1:30:47

Yeah.

1:30:48

So, I don't know.

1:30:51

Well, I'll tell you what we should do then.

1:30:53

I know exactly what we should do.

1:30:54

Yeah.

1:30:55

We should go to the latest one because we were both on hold today.

1:30:58

We both...

1:30:59

Because that's a thing.

1:31:00

That's like a message from God basically saying you've got to do hold.

1:31:03

Well, it is.

1:31:04

And then...

1:31:05

Hang on.

1:31:06

And then...

1:31:07

And then you go back in time one.

1:31:10

And then you go back in time one again.

1:31:12

We could do that.

1:31:13

Yeah.

1:31:14

Or...

1:31:19

So, let's roll back a little bit.

1:31:22

Yeah.

1:31:23

So, for me, I listened to...

1:31:25

On my playlist, I had Violet and Miss World.

1:31:27

Yeah.

1:31:28

From Live Through This, right?

1:31:29

From Hole.

1:31:30

And then you said, actually, I heard Celebrity Skin this week.

1:31:34

Yeah.

1:31:35

And that's dead good as well.

1:31:36

Yeah.

1:31:37

That's got like...

1:31:38

It's got Celebrity Skin on there.

1:31:39

It's got Reasons To Be Beautiful.

1:31:40

It's got Malibu.

1:31:41

It's got like...

1:31:42

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:31:42

It's good.

1:31:43

Boys On Radio.

1:31:44

It is.

1:31:45

But that's a poppy one.

1:31:46

And I quite like the Raw one, which is what that first one was.

1:31:49

They...

1:31:50

It is a proper punky record.

1:31:51

Yeah.

1:31:52

That was...

1:31:53

That was released days after Kurt killed himself as well.

1:31:55

Yeah, yeah.

1:31:56

So, there's like...

1:31:57

There's really...

1:31:58

I think there's a lot to...

1:31:59

Yeah.

1:32:00

There's a lot to unpack.

1:32:01

Yeah.

1:32:02

I think there...

1:32:03

With a lot of the lyrics, a lot of the...

1:32:04

Yeah.

1:32:05

I guess the way the press dealt with that as well.

1:32:07

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:32:08

You know, there was a lot...

1:32:09

They were kind of ripped apart a little bit in the press with kind of a...

1:32:11

Are you sure this is a good...

1:32:12

You know what I mean?

1:32:13

They're putting this out now kind of thing.

1:32:14

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:32:15

Have you been waiting for this kind of thing?

1:32:17

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:32:18

So, let's do it.

1:32:20

Let's do Live Through This by whole 1994.

1:32:23

Bosh.

1:32:24

I like it.

1:32:26

Yeah.

1:32:27

Do you know...

1:32:28

Was she one of the first people that was called a riot girl?

1:32:31

I don't know.

1:32:32

Do you know that whole class of girls that were like the kind of...

1:32:34

Yeah, there was, wasn't there?

1:32:35

You know, the whole punky...

1:32:36

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:32:38

I liked that.

1:32:39

Yeah.

1:32:40

I don't know about you.

1:32:41

She probably was.

1:32:42

Yeah.

1:32:43

That kind of...

1:32:43

You know, that whole kind of...

1:32:44

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:32:45

Screw you.

1:32:45

You know what I mean?

1:32:46

Yeah.

1:32:46

Because girls weren't like that in the 90s.

1:32:47

You know what I mean?

1:32:48

No, no, no.

1:32:49

There was like lad culture a little bit, I suppose, but not like early in the 90s.

1:32:52

No.

1:32:53

And yeah, Courtney Love was properly like up yours.

1:32:56

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:32:57

You know what I mean?

1:32:57

I'm a punk rocker.

1:32:58

I don't...

1:32:59

Yeah, yeah.

1:33:00

Okay, I've just got like...

1:33:01

Because I'm a girl.

1:33:02

Yeah.

1:33:03

Do you know?

1:33:04

She was dead good.

1:33:05

Yeah.

1:33:06

Loud.

1:33:07

Yeah.

1:33:08

Yeah.

1:33:09

thank you for listening

1:33:10

alright bye bye

1:33:11

see ya

1:33:11

sorry
